The biocompatibility of glass-fibre reinforced composites (GFRCs) – a systematic review

Purpose: Fiber-reinforced composites (FRCs) have received considerable attention, owing to their potential use in dental prostheses or bone fracture fixation applications. The aim of this systematic review was analyze and report the biological properties FRCs reported existing literature. Study selections: A search four databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web Science, Cochrane library) performed identify all relevant studies published between 1962 2019. limited laboratory-based English. Citation mining also through cross-referencing included hand searching journals. Results: total 1283 potentially articles were initially identified, thirty-three full-text screened. In final ten for review, investigated bacterial adhesion growth abilities on FRCs, fibroblastic cytotoxicity different surface-treated two osseointegration FRCs. Owing heterogeneity fiber types, FRC-coating, lack standardized testing protocols, a meta-analysis not feasible. indicated that glass fibers, particular E-glass are superior ceramics other terms adherence, fibroblast cytotoxicity, cell viability. Conclusions: Glass-fiber-reinforced cytocompatible materials possess satisfactory can be used prosthesis craniofacial implants. Further research is necessary regulate matrix ion release/degradation prolong demonstrated properties.
